Long bio
Ladd Keith, Ph.D., is a climate planner and associate professor of planning at the University of Arizona, where he directs the Heat Resilience Initiative. His research focuses on heat planning, policy, and governance, helping communities, regions, and nations build heat resilience. He argues that our cities were built for a climate that no longer exists, and that extreme heat, already the deadliest weather hazard in the United States, must be governed at the scale of the heatshed: the regional area across which heat operates, crossing city, county, and state lines the way a watershed does. He defined heat governance in Nature, a definition used in NOAA and NIHHIS’s A Maturity Model for Heat Governance and the UN’s Extreme Heat Risk Governance Framework and Toolkit, and co-authored the American Planning Association’s first guidebook on heat. He writes Heatshed, a newsletter on how we plan for and govern extreme heat.
